Dust Mite Cover Washing Instructions

Dust Mite Cover Washing Instructions

We get emails and calls very often from people that need dust mite cover washing instructions.  Our dust mite covers don’t require frequent washing.  It is easy to forget what to do when you don’t do it very often.  Our dust mite covers are very easy-care.

Here are just a few tips.

Dust Mite Cover Washing – The First Wash

Another common question people have is, “Do I need to wash the cover before I put it on the bed?”   The answer is that it is not necessary. There are no dust mites in your new cover!

If you do decide you want to wash the cover, be sure to check that you have ordered the correct size before you wash it!  We cannot accept an exchange or return of an item that has been used.

Even if you don’t sleep on the cover, it will be considered used if you wash it.  If you do decide to wash the cover, make sure the zipper is open before you put it in the wash.  Also, don’t overcrowd the washer.  If you have a top loading machine:

  • Open lid to washer and start the water filling
  • You can wash on warm or cold water for the first wash
  • When the water is 1/2 full add your detergent
  • When detergent is dissolved, add your zippered cover.

If you have a front loading machine, just make sure you don’t crowd the machine and follow your manufacturer’s instructions.  Wash in warm or cold water.

Once your cover is washed, move it to the dryer and tumble dry on the low or permanent press settings.

We don’t recommend that you line dry your zippered mattress covers.

Dust Mite Cover Washing – Subsequent Washings

After washing your cover for the first time, you need to make sure that you wash the cover in a manner that will not only clean the fabric but will remove any collected allergens.

Take the cover off the mattress, pillow, feather bed or duvet.  Open the zipper.  If the cover is made from one of the microweave fabrics, turn the cover inside out.  If the cover is made from the bed bug fabric or the Linen fabric, do not turn the cover inside out. But do keep the zipper fully open.

When washing your dust mite cover, we recommend the use of De-Mite Laundry Additive to your detergent.  This will allow you to wash in cold water.  Washing in cold water will prolong the life of your dust mite cover.   Allergists tell you to wash your bedding in 140°F water in order to kill mites.  Water this hot damages fabrics.  By washing with De-Mite you will remove the dust mites and save your fabric.  If you don’t like the smell of De-Mite, then use Allersearch Allergen Wash by Alkaline Labs for your dust mite cover washing chores.

After washing your cover, place it in the dryer and tumble dry on the low or medium setting.  Do not place the cover back on the bed until it is completely dry.

Dust Mite Cover Washing Frequency

This is another common question.  “How often do I wash my covers?”  The simple answer is to wash them when they get dirty.

If you are diligent in washing your sheets, pillowcases, and blankets every 7 days then your dust mite covers will only need washing a few times a year.  A good rule of thumb is to wash your mattress and featherbed cover when you flip the mattress.

This is usually twice a year.  The duvet cover should be washed with the change of seasons.  Your pillow covers should be washed about every 4 to 6 weeks.

With proper care, your dust mite covers will give you years of protection.
